Grieg and women composers
Edvard Grieg was a well-connected and highly esteemed composer during his lifetime. Colleagues such as Johannes Brahms and Peter Tchaikovsky were among his close friends. Underestimated, however, is the fact that many female composers of the 19th century also belonged to his circle of acquaintances. The program thus presents a hitherto little illuminated chapter of Leipzig's 19th century music history, performed in the extremely charming and rarely heard instrumentation of mezzo-soprano, horn and piano.
Songs and pieces by Edvard Grieg, Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, Ethel Smyth, Clara Schumann, Amelie Nikisch, Agathe Backer Grøndahl and others.
